How did rebels declare independence from Mexico and become Californians?

There was never a time during the Mexican-American War when rebels in the Mexican province of Alta California declared independence from Mexico. Instead, the United States declared war on Mexico in 1846 and by the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, it received title to Alta California in the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo.
