The World Trade Center Towers: Past, Present, and Future

"The New York Towers" most famously refers to the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan—a site of architectural ambition, tragedy, and resilience.

1. The Original Twin Towers (1973–2001)

• Architect: Minoru Yamasaki; Engineers: Leslie Robertson, John Skilling.
• Specs: 110 stories each. North Tower (1 WTC): 1,368 ft (417 m) + 360 ft antenna. South Tower (2 WTC): 1,362 ft. Tallest in world 1971–1973 (surpassed by Sears Tower).
• Design: Tube-frame structure, narrow office windows (18"), aluminum alloy facade. 50,000 workers, 200,000 daily visitors.
• Destruction: September 11, 2001 – hijacked AA11 & UA175 impacted floors 93–99 and 77–85. Both collapsed within 102 minutes. 2,753 killed at site.

2. One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) – Completed 2014

• Architect: David Childs (SOM).
• Height: 1,776 ft (541 m) – symbolic year of US Declaration of Independence. Tallest in Western Hemisphere.
• Features: 104 floors (94 occupied). Reinforced concrete core, blast-resistant base, 70 elevators, sky lobby 64. Observatory (100–102). Tenants: Condé Nast, GSA, Servcorp.

3. 4 World Trade Center (150 Greenwich St) – 2013

• Architect: Fumihiko Maki (Maki & Associates).
• 72 stories, 977 ft. Tallest by Japanese architect in NYC. Platinum LEED. Tenants: Spotify, Port Authority, NYC govt.

4. 7 World Trade Center (250 Greenwich St) – 2006

• Architect: Richard Rogers (Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners).
• 52 stories, 743 ft. First rebuilt tower. Green design, tenant: Moody's, Ameriprise, MSCI.

5. The Memorial & Museum

• 9/11 Memorial: Twin reflecting pools in tower footprints, names of 2,983 victims (1993 & 2001).
• 9/11 Museum: Underground, artifacts, survivor stories, historical exhibition.

6. Remaining / Planned

• 2 WTC (200 Greenwich): Foster + Partners design; stalled awaiting anchor tenant.
• 3 WTC (175 Greenwich): Richard Rogers; completed 2018, 80 stories, 1,079 ft. Tenants: GroupM, Uber, McKinsey.
• 5 WTC: Proposed, site currently Liberty Park / St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
• Performing Arts Center (The Shed / PAC): Open 2019/2023.

The site is now a living neighborhood: 10M+ annual visitors, 30,000+ residents, transit hub (Oculus, PATH, 12 subway lines).
