What connection is New South Wales name to UK?

New South Wales, a state in southeastern Australia, was named after the Welsh nobleman Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (later King George IV of the United Kingdom). The region was claimed by British explorer James Cook in 1770 and named "New Wales" as it was perceived to be similar to the southern part of Wales at the time (South Wales). In 1802, Joseph Banks proposed it became "New South Wales".
