No Walmart in NYC—But Sam's Club Is Close By

Zero Walmart stores inside New York City's five boroughs. The company has tried (Brooklyn 2005, 2011; Bronx 2013) — unions, pols, community boards blocked every attempt.

What *Is* There

• Sam's Club (Walmart-owned warehouse club): 3 locations within 15 mi
  • Westbury, NY (Nassau County) — 8 mi from Queens
  • East Brunswick, NJ — 12 mi from Staten Island
  • Secaucus, NJ — 6 mi from Manhattan (Lincoln Tunnel)
• Walmart Supercenters in NJ (Kearny, North Bergen, Edison), Long Island (Riverhead, Centereach), Westchester (Mount Kisco)

Why NYC Says No

• Living wage / union opposition (RWDSU, UFCW)
• Zoning (FAR, parking, loading)
• Small business protection narrative
• Political calculus: more votes in "no" than "yes"

NYC Alternatives

• Target (10+ locations, Manhattan included)
• Costco (5 locations: Brooklyn, Harlem, LIC, Staten Island, Westbury)
• BJ's Wholesale (3 locations)
• Local bodegas, supermarkets (Key Food, Associated, Fairway, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods)
• Amazon Fresh / Whole Foods delivery — 1–2 hr

Walmart delivers to NYC via Walmart.com — but the big blue box stays on the other side of the river.
