New York City's Five Boroughs Explained
New York City comprises five boroughs—each a county equivalent with distinct character:
- Manhattan (New York County) – Core business, cultural, tourist hub
- Brooklyn (Kings County) – Most populous; diverse neighborhoods, arts scene
- Queens (Queens County) – Largest by area; world's most ethnically diverse urban area
- The Bronx (Bronx County) – Birthplace of hip-hop; Yankees, Bronx Zoo, NY Botanical Garden
- Staten Island (Richmond County) – Suburban feel; ferry views, parks, historic sites
All five consolidated in 1898. Each has a borough president (largely ceremonial) and distinct community boards. Together, they form the United States' most populous city: 8.3+ million residents across 302 sq mi.
