Where did people in Rhode Island come from?

Rhode Island's population can be divided into those people born in the state; born outside of the state, but within the United States; and born outside of the country. According to census data of 2013, 68.1% of all residents were born in Rhode Island, 28.4% were born elsewhere in the US, and 3.6% were born outside of the United States.

Some of the largest countries people in Rhode Island were born outside of include Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, India, Guatemala, Laos, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Peru, and Thailand. In 2005 over 35 languages other than English were common amongst some residents.
