Turn Signals (Blinkers) Required on Motorcycles in New York
Yes. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL § 375[2][a]) requires all motorcycles to be equipped with operational turn signals (front and rear). This applies to:
- All motorcycles registered in NY
- Out-of-state motorcycles operated in NY (must comply with home state law OR NY law, whichever stricter)
- Vintage/classic bikes — no blanket exemption; pre-1973 may use hand signals in addition to signals if originally unequipped (VTL § 375[2][b])
Hand Signals: Legal Backup, Not Replacement
- Left arm extended = left turn
- Left arm bent upward = right turn
- Left arm bent downward = stop/slow
- Must be used continuously for last 100 ft before turn (VTL § 1163)
Hand signals supplement — they don't replace — electric signals on post-1972 bikes.
Penalties
- VTL § 375 violation: Up to $150 fine + $93 surcharge + 2 points (if moving violation cited)
- Inspection failure: Annual NYS inspection checks signal operation
- Accident liability: Non-functioning signals = evidence of negligence
Best Practice
Use both electric signals and hand signals. Redundancy communicates intent to distracted drivers. Check bulbs/LEDs monthly. LED upgrades (DOT-compliant) improve visibility and draw less current.
NY's dense traffic makes signaling survival-critical — not just legal compliance.
