Origin of "New Hampshire": Named for an English County

New Hampshire was named by Captain John Mason (1629) after the southern English county of Hampshire, where he had lived. "Hampshire" itself derives from Old English Hamtunscīr—"the shire (district) of Hamtun" (Southampton), meaning "home settlement by the River Hamble." Thus, New Hampshire essentially means "New [Hampshire]."
