Laotians are the indigenous ethnic group of Laos (bordered by Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Thailand). The Lao people comprise ~55% of the population and speak Lao, a Tai–Kadai language.

Culture & Religion

Theravada Buddhism dominates (>90%), blended with animist beliefs, especially in rural areas.

Customs

Strong community, hospitality, respectful greetings (the nop bow). Monks are revered. Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) is the biggest celebration.

History

Descended from Tai migrants from southern China. Lane Xang kingdom (14th–18th century), French protectorate (19th century), independence 1949, Lao PDR established 1975.

Today

Young population (half under 25), mostly rural rice farmers, growing urbanization with Vientiane as capital.
