New York City's previous name was New Amsterdam. It was founded by the Dutch in 1624 and named after Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. The city remained under Dutch control until 1664 when it was captured by the English. The English renamed the city New York after the Duke of York and Albany, the future King James II of England.
