How New Amsterdam Became New York

1624: Dutch West India Company establishes New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, named after the Dutch capital.

1664: English fleet captures the colony; King Charles II grants it to his brother, James, Duke of York and Albany (future James II).

The city and colony are renamed New York in his honor. The name has persisted through British and American rule.
