When did New Jersey start?

New Jersey was founded on December 18, 1664, when King Charles II granted a charter to his brother, James, Duke of York, for a vast tract of land stretching from the Connecticut River to the Delaware River, including what is now New Jersey. The charter empowered the Duke to establish a colony and to make laws for its government, and so New Jersey became a proprietary colony under the rule of the Duke of York.
