Eligibility to Participate in Government in New York

Voting:

* To vote in New York, you must be:

* A citizen of the United States

* At least 18 years old

* A resident of New York State for at least 30 days

* Not under a court order of mental incompetence

Running for Office:

* To run for office in New York, you must:

* Be a citizen of the United States

* At least 18 years old (21 years old for some offices)

* A resident of the district you are running to represent for at least one year

* Not have been convicted of a felony or other serious crime

Additional Requirements:

* In addition to the above requirements, some positions may have additional requirements, such as:

* A certain level of education

* Experience in a particular profession

* Passing a civil service exam
