Who discovered Papua New Guinea?

In 1526, Portuguese and Spanish voyagers arrived in what is now Papua New Guinea for the first time, and gave it the name Papua. Later, in 1545, the Spanish explorer, Íñigo Ortiz de Retes, sighted islands to the north of New Guinea, referring to them as Nueva Guinea ("New Guinea").
