How to Renew a Passport From Another Country

A passport is a legal document issued by your country's government. It is used to prove that you have permission to travel internationally. It may also be used as a form of identification, since most passports contain a picture and identifying information such as date of birth and physical attributes. Passports are valid for a set time period. They must be renewed before the expiration date, or you may experience difficulties with traveling. Most countries do not require you to return home to renew your passport. In the United States, your country's embassy most likely provides passport services.

  Contact the office using the information provided to determine if an appointment is required or if your passport can be renewed through the mail or online. Certain countries, such as France, require in-person appointments.

  Gather the documents required by the consulate or embassy. This may include a birth certificate, driver's license or current passport.

  Obtain in person or print out the application from the website and fill it out as directed if your country allows you to renew your passport by mail.

  Submit the application along with the required payment to the correct address either in person or by mail.
