How to Renew a U.S. Passport in India

Renewing your passport in India is basically the same process as renewing it within the United States. Like the process for people in the U.S., you will have to determine which embassy or consulate serves the area in which you are located in India. You should know where that location is, since the U.S. State Department recommends that you register with the nearest United States Embassy or consulate when traveling anywhere abroad.

Instructions

    • 1

Log on to the U.S. Department of State's "Application for a U.S. Passport" webpage. Fill out the application, and then print out the completed application.

    • 2

Decide which consulate or U.S. Embassy is closest to your location in India by visiting the United States Bureau of Consular Affairs "India" webpage. There you will see links to the U.S. embassies and consulates in India: Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkati. Click on the location closest to you, which will direct you to that office's webpage.

    • 3

Obtain a demand draft for the passport application fee from a bank or financial institution, and direct the payment to the consulate or embassy nearest you. The fee schedule is available at each consulate or embassy's website; the fee schedule is the same for every location.

    • 4

Get two recent, passport-size color photos of yourself.

    • 5

Mail or drop off your application materials to the nearest consulate or embassy. Be sure to include your passport application, your expired passport, the demand-draft payment, and the passport photos. If you've changed your name since your last passport was issued, include your original marriage certificate. Also, if your appearance has changed dramatically since your last passport, also submit a photocopy of another form of identification. You should receive your new passport in about 7-10 days.
