How to Renew an American Passport From India

Renewing a U.S passport in India is a fairly simple process and the application can usually be submitted by courier service. Normally, you can expect to receive your passport within 15 working days. However, if you are renewing a passport which was originally issued more than 15 years ago, you will have to apply in person at one of the American embassies or consulates in India. You should call ahead to make an appointment and to find out what the U.S. passport office hours for that consulate or embassy is.

Instructions

Normal Passport Renewal

  Download the DS-82 form from the U.S. State Department website (see References). Fill out the application with your personal information.

  Prepare all the necessary documentation. Locate your old passport, which must be 15 years old or younger. Apply for (or locate) your marriage certificate if you have changed your name. You will have to supply this with your passport application. Visit a passport photography shop and purchase two identical passport photos to send in with your application.

  Prepare the passport fee of $75 or Rs. 3600. Purchase an international money order for this exact U.S. dollar amount, made payable to the American Consulate General, Mumbai.

  Place the passport application form, the photos, marriage certificate, old passport, and application fee in an envelope and send by courier or registered post to:

  Expect to receive your passport within 15 working days from the consulate´s receiving your passport application.
Renewing a Passport Issued More than 15 Years Ago

  Download Passport Application DS-11 (See References). Print each page separately. Do not print on front and back of page. Disregard application instructions on page 1 and 2, as these are made for applicants living in the United States.

  Find your old passport and visit a passport photography shop and purchase two passport-sized pictures. Prepare the passport fee, which is $100 (Rs. 4800), and pay it in cash or by international money order. Purchase and take a prepaid courier envelope from a Western India VFS office if you want your passport to be sent to you.

  Visit the nearest U.S. consulate offices and submit the information in person. Visit the U.S. Department of State's embassy and consulate listings site, to find the nearest office in India to your location (see References). Passport offices are usually open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Check the Consulate's website before leaving. Most consulates require appointments for non-emergency situations.
