How to Renew an Irish Passport

Like any other European Union member state passport, an Irish passport allows its owner to travel freely throughout EU countries and live in any of these states for up to three months. Irish passports are issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs only to citizens of Ireland. For citizens of Ireland, the process is simple and begins at the nearest Irish consular office.

  • Application form
  • 2 recent color passport photos
  • Co-signer's endorsement of application and photos
  • Old passport or proof of citizenship

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Dublin Passport Office, or Ireland's nearest embassy or consulate. From here you will pick up the renewal application form and specific instructions with regards to fees and processing times, which may vary.

    • 2

Complete each section of the passport application form in black pen using capital letters, and sign the document in the designated box.

    • 3

Attach two recent color passport photos. You will need a qualified witness to sign the back of one of the photos and the witness section of your application. The application will outline the qualifications for your witness.

    • 4

Include proof of Irish citizenship with your application form. If you are under 18 or do not have a passport for any reason, your Long Form Irish Birth Certificate will suffice. Otherwise, provide your own birth certificate, your parents' birth certificates and your parents' State Marriage Certificate. Another option is to provide your Irish Certificate of Naturalization in addition to your birth certificate. For all cases of lost or stolen passports, a police report is necessary in addition to your proof of citizenship.

    • 5

Enclose the processing fee as designated by the application form, and submit directly to the Passport Office, or through the nearest embassy or Consulate of Ireland.

    • 6

Allow at least four weeks for your passport renewal to be processed. For applicants living abroad, shipping time can extend your waiting period even longer, so make your international travel plans accordingly. If you need your renewal in a rush, you will need to pay extra for urgent service (50 euros for adults, 25 euros for children as of 2009), and you may need to provide proof of travel.
