How to Renew an Irish Passport in the USA

A passport is a legal travel document that confirms the identity and nationality of the owner. Each passport is assigned a unique identification number which is internationally recognized. Irish citizens who wish to renew an outdated passport in the United States can do so at any of the Irish embassies or consulates, or at some U.S. post offices. It is not possible to complete an application or download the necessary forms online.

      Obtain and complete the APS 1 application form. It is available at any U.S. post office that displays the "Service Plus" logo, or at all Irish embassies or consulates. Refer to the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs website to locate the Irish embassy and all Irish consulates in the United States.

      Include two identical passport photographs with your application. They must be at least 35mm x 45mm, and no larger than 38mm x 50mm.

      Enclose your current passport and proof of your Irish citizenship. Acceptable documents include a citizenship notice or civil birth certificate.

      Return your completed documents and passport materials to the office where you obtained the application form. Make sure that a witness at the facility signs the back of one of your passport photographs. They are also required to write the form number shown in Section 9 of your application on that same photograph.

      Pay the necessary processing fees either by check or credit card. Your passport will be mailed to you within 6 to 8 weeks.
