Gather all the documents you need to renew your passport. These include your old Mercosur passport, your Documento Nacional de Indentidad (DNI or ID card) and three, three-quarter profile, 1.5 by 1.5-inch photos (against a white background with your head uncovered and glasses removed). In some cases, you also will need your birth certificate.
The birth certificate only is necessary when your DNI has errors. Consult with the consulate about whether it will be necessary when you make your appointment. The renewal costs $30, as of November 2010. All consulates accept Money Orders. Consult with the consulate when you make your appointment to find out about alternative payment methods.
Download and complete the passport application form, which is called "ficha de registracion" or "formulario" (the passport section is found on the Spanish section of the site) from the consulate website. The Chicago and Houston consulates do not have websites, and the form may have to be obtained and completed in person. When you make your appointment, you can find out if the forms provided by the other consulates' websites are acceptable.
Call to make an appointment to renew your passport once you have all your documents and completed form (where possible).
Go to the consulate at the appointed time. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, your application will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis. Your renewed passport will be issued the day of your appointment.
