How to Renew an Expired U.S. Passport in Person

When your current passport expires it's a good idea to go in and get it renewed right away. This will eliminate the headache of trying to renew right before a vacation when you may be forced to pay an extra fee to have the renewal expedited. There is a standard renewal process when you renew in person.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your local passport agency or acceptance facility. Both clerk of court offices and post offices are examples of acceptance facilities. You can find facilities near you on the U.S. Department of State website.

    • 2

Provide completed Application for Passport (Form DS-11). Applications can be downloaded from the U.S. Department of State website or obtained from any passport agency or acceptance facility.

    • 3

Bring with you proof of U.S. citizenship. Acceptable forms of proof of citizenship are your expired U.S. Passport and a certified birth certificate. Having these are ideal, but if unavailable you will need a Letter of No Record issued by the state saying that there is no birth certificate on file for you. In addition to your Letter of No Record take with you a hospital birth certificate and/or a baptismal certificate.

    • 4

Show proof of identity. Accepted documents for proof of identity include an expired U.S. passport, a naturalization certificate, or a current, valid driver's license, government or military ID. If you cannot show proof of identity with these types of documents you will need a combination of Social Security card, credit card, bank card, library card and a witness with a valid ID who has known you for at least two years.

Take two passport photos. Photos must be 2x2 inches, identical, recent (taken in the past six months), color, front-facing, taken in front of a plain background and in normal street clothes. When in doubt most passport agencies or acceptance facilities will take your passport photos for a fee. Sometimes this is the easier option.

Pay the applicable fee. Most passport agencies and acceptance facilities accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, debit or check cards, personal, certified, cashier's or travelers' checks, money orders or bank drafts.
