How to Renew a Swedish Passport

As of January of 2010, all Swedish citizens living in the United States who need to renew their passport must apply in person at the Swedish Embassy in Washington, DC, or on certain pre-selected dates at the Honorary Consulate in New York City. All Swedish passport holders must be digitally photographed and fingerprinted in person in order to obtain a new Swedish passport. Renewals are easiest if obtained in Sweden. All children under the age of five who require a Swedish passport must be added to the population rolls in Sweden prior to the application process.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the Swedish consulate for an appointment if you are in Washington, D. C. or can make it to the primary consulate in the capitol. The Washington Consulate has the most flexible dates available for renewing your passport, but having an appointment is highly recommended by the Swedish consulate.

    • 2

Check the dates for passport renewal at the honorary consulates located in New York, New York or Phoenix, Arizona. Make an appointment and bear in mind that the number of passports renewed at the consulates are very limited in number.

    • 3

Obtain a new Swedish passport if yours has been stolen or lost by making an appointment with the Swedish consulate. You must bring an older passport, a form of photo identification, a copy of your population registration record (personbevis), your documentation proving you are a legal U. S. resident, and two passport photos.

    • 4

Renew a passport for a child or minor by bringing the written consent of both legal guardians and proof of guardianship along with the child's Swedish population record. These can be obtained through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) online.
