How to Request Passport Information for Passport Renewal

When the time comes to renew your passport you might need information on how the renewal process works. Any of your local Passport Acceptance Facilities will give you any information regarding passport renewals you request. The U.S. Department of State's Passport information website also provides all of the information necessary to renewing a U.S. Passport.

Instructions

Obtain and complete a form DS-82, the application for a U.S. Passport by mail. Incomplete forms are not processed.

Take two passport photos. You can take your own photos or have them taken at any Passport Acceptance Facility (see Resources). Your photos must meet all photo guidelines required by the U.S. Department of State. Your photos must be in color, taken less than six months ago, two inches by two inches with between one and one and 3/8 of an inch from chin to forehead. Mail your application, photos and your current passport to the U.S. Department of State using the address listed on Form DS-82. Include a check payable to the U.S. Treasury in the amount of $110, which is the passport renewal fee as of 2010. Your new passport is mailed to you six to eight weeks after your application is received.
