Passport Renewal Information

You can renew your U.S. passport either in person or through the mail. In 2010, the timeframe for passport renewal was up to six weeks, with processing fees at $110. If you need to renew your passport in a hurry, you could opt to pay extra for an expedited renewal, which is done faster.
  1. Renewal By Mail

    • Apply by mail if your last U.S. passport is not damaged and was issued in the last 15 years, and you can submit it with your application. Also, the passport should have been issued in your current name, or you should be able to document any name change when you were 16 or older. To renew, fill out form DS-82, following the instruments for supporting material and fees you should submit, and mail it to the government address on the form.

    Renewal In Person

    • If you need a passport in a hurry, or you do not meet the requirements to renew by mail, make an appointment at your Regional Passport Agency. Contact the National Passport Information Center to make an appointment or locate a passport agency.

    Renewal Outside the U.S.

    • U.S. citizens residing outside the country should renew their passports at the nearest U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate. If you are in Canada, you should submit form DS-82 to the address mentioned on the form.
