Updated Passport Information

With all the United States governmental changes in travel documentation requirements, many travelers have questions regarding passports. Full implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative began in June 2009. Under the initiative, all U.S. and Canadian citizens, as well as citizens of Mexico and Bermuda, must have a passport to enter or re-enter the United States by land, sea and air. Infants, newborns and minor children also are required to have a passport for international travel.
  1. U.S. Territories

    • United States citizens do not need a passport when traveling directly to and directly from a U.S. territory. The territories include the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa. This exception applies to air and sea travel. However, re-entry into to the United States might be quicker and more convenient if you have a passport.

    Getting a Passport

    • You must apply in person at a passport acceptance facility or passport agency if you are getting a new passport, you are under age 16, your passport was lost or damaged or if your passport has expired or your name has changed. You will need to bring a completed DS-11 application form. This form can be downloaded from the U.S. Department of State website, or you can pick up a form at a passport acceptance facility, normally a post office.

    Photos

    • Passport applicants must have two identical color passport photos. The photos must be 2 x 2 inches. Head wear is prohibited unless is it worn for religious reasons. According to the U.S. Department of State, any supportive device for infants must not be shown in the photo.

    Required Documents

    • Passport applicants must supply photo identification, such as a driver's license, a photocopy of the front and back of the photo ID, a certified birth certificate or any other document proving your U.S. citizenship. For minors ages 16 to 17, a document of parental consent is required. Parents or guardians must be present to sign the minor's application.

    Passport Fees

    • Passport fees vary based on the type of application -- first-time or renewal -- and the age of the applicant. To get current information on the federal government schedule of charges, check out the U.S. State Department's Passport Fees web page (see Resource).
