U.S. Govt. Passport Information

If you want to travel out of the country, you will need a passport. Passports are also required for reentry into the United States. Applying for a passport is not difficult but does take time, and you will be required to provide certain documents.
  1. Passport Application Facilities

    • Apply for passports in various locations in addition to official passport offices. Many post offices accept passport applications. Inquire at your local courthouse if it accepts passport applications. You may also find application forms at many libraries. Many retail locations, including drug stores and office supply stores, offer passport photo services, as photos must follow specific requirements.

    Fees

    • Pay the application fee when you apply. Fees tend to vary and do increase from time to time. Adult passport fees (ages 16 and older) are higher than the fees for children, and first time fees are higher than renewal fees. Fees for adults applying for the first time, as of August 2010, are $110 for the application plus $25 execution fee.

    Documents

    • If you are applying for the first time for your passport, and are over the age of 16, you must apply in person at a designated passport application facility. Bring with you the completed application form, proof of citizenship, a current photo identification card such as a driver's license, two passport photos and the application fee.

    Processing Times

    • It will take approximately six weeks for your passport and any documentation you were required to send with the application to be returned to you. Opt for expedited service if you require a passport more quickly; this service, though more expensive, will allow you to receive your passport in approximately two to three weeks.
