Information on Getting a Passport

A passport is required for admission into most countries. It is also necessary for entry or re-entry into the U.S. The process is detailed, though, and adequate planning is required.
  1. Citizenship

    • You must be a U.S. citizen to receive a passport. Acceptable documentation for establishing this includes a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, consular report of birth abroad or certification of birth, or a certificate of citizenship.

    Additional Requirements

    • In addition to form DS-11 (Application For A U.S. Passport), you need the appropriate fees, two passport size photos, a social security number and identification in the form of a driver's license.

    Applying in Person

    • First-time applicants and minors must apply in person at an approved passport acceptance facility. Processing can be expedited for an additional fee.

    Minors

    • Minors must have the consent of both parents. If both parents are unable to apply in person, a notarized statement of consent must be submitted for the absent party unless sole custody can be established and adequately documented.

    Renewals

    • Renewals can be handled through the mail with the submission of Form DS-82 (Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail), you need the appropriate fees and an undamaged passport.
