Passport Costs & Information

Your passport is your proof of citizenship. You'll need it whenever you enter the United States from international soil. There are two options available: The book, valid for all international travel, and the card, used only for crossing borders by land or sea.
  1. Where to Apply

    • First-time applicants must apply for their passport in person. Many post offices and county clerk's offices will be able to assist you in completing your application. Passport renewals may be done in person or, in some cases, online.

    Required Documentation

    • Present proof of citizenship to apply for your passport, such as a previous passport or certified copy of your birth certificate. You also will need your driver's license or another valid form of identification. Lastly, you'll need two identical passport photos that are 2-by-2 inches. There are very specific requirements that must be met before the photos can be accepted. For example, the photos must be front view with an all-white background, and you must be wearing normal street attire.

    Cost

    • To renew your passport, you need to pay $30 for the card or $110 for the book, as of November 2010. For new passports you need to add a $25 acceptance fee to the total price.
