Information on Getting a Valid Passport

Since the implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which requires travelers to have a valid passport to enter or reenter the United States, more and more travelers find that they need to get a passport before they go on vacation.
  1. Application

    • Passports applications can be picked up at regional passport agencies or at passport acceptance agencies (such as U.S. post offices). They are also available online (see Resources).

    Photographs

    • Passport applicants must submit two identical 2-by-2-inch color passport photos. Normal street attire is required, and hat or sunglasses are prohibited in the photos.

    Photo Identification

    • Applicants must present a photo ID such as a driver's license or other government-issued photo ID. Photocopies of the front and back of the ID also must be submitted.

    Proof of Citizenship

    • Proof of citizenship such as a certified copy of a birth certificate or naturalization documents must be presented at the time of application.

    Cost

    • As of September 2009, the cost for an adult passport is $75 plus a processing fee of $25. The cost for a children's passport is $60 plus the $25 processing fee.
