Ghana Passport Information

According to Ghanaweb.com, the first website by and for Ghanaian people, the process of obtaining a passport from inside Ghana can be somewhat unreliable and take up to three months.
  1. Applying in Ghana

    • Passport applications can take up to 3 months, unless you are able to pay a large fee to complete the process in approximately a week. Applications can only be made at the Ghana Passport Office in the capital city, Accra, with different regions of the country each allocated only one day per week when its residents can apply.

    Applying via the Ghanaian Embassy

    • If you are renewing your Ghanaian passport, or are a dual citizen of both Ghana and the United States applying for a Ghanaian passport for the first time, you can complete the process via the Ghanaian Embassy in Washington D.C. As of 2010, the application form costs $30 and can be obtained in person or by mail. The processing fee is $100 and you should receive your passport in around two weeks. An expedited application costs an extra $50.

    Passports for Adopted Children

    • Before you bring your adopted child from Ghana to the U.S., you will need to apply for a new copy of their birth certificate, which includes your name. You will then be able to apply for their Ghanaian passport. Once the passport and birth certificate are in order, you must present these, along with your passport, to the U.S. Embassy in Accra, where a visa for your child can be issued for their entry into the U.S.
