Places to Expedite a Passport Renewal

Of all your international travel documents -- plane tickets, hotel bookings and travel insurance --a valid passport may be the most important. Nothing prompts pre-travel panic like realizing you don't have the proper documentation to leave the country. Fortunately, if you already have a passport and if you meet U.S. State Department requirements, you can expedite its renewal at several different locations.
  1. By Mail

    • Expedite a passport renewal to the U.S. State Department directly by sending them the required documentation. Instructions for renewing a passport are on the U.S. State Department's website. You'll need to meet their guidelines. Your most recent U.S. passport cannot be damaged, must have been issued at age 16 or older, issued within the last 15 years and have your current name, unless you can provide legal documentation of your name change, such as a marriage certificate.

If you meet these requirements, send the U.S. State Department Form DS-82, the Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail. Additionally submit your most recent U.S. passport, a passport photo, name change documentation (if applicable) and the passport and expedition fees. Write "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the mailing envelope and pay for postage to and from the State Department. Review the details and tips for renewing a passport by mail, find current processing times and find Form DS-82 on the State Department website (see Resources).

    Regional Passport Agency

    • According to the U.S. State Department, you can expedite a passport renewal through a U.S. regional passport agency if, "The U.S. passport is needed in less than two weeks for international travel," or if, "the U.S. passport is needed within four weeks to obtain a foreign visa." Find a list of regional passport agencies, located in most major cities throughout the United States, on the U.S. State Department's website (see Resources). Call an agency to schedule an appointment.

    Passport Expedition Service

    • You can work with a passport expedition service instead of going directly to the U.S. State Department to renew a passport quickly. These services know which regional passport agencies have the least delays and they can assure that you submit the correct documentation, according to the Forbes website. Be prepared to pay "a few hundred dollars," as of 2011, on top of the fee required by the U.S. State Department for expedited service, according to CNN. Some examples of passport expedition services are Its Easy Passport Services, Passports and Visas, Priority Passports and Rush My Passport.

    International Locations

    • U.S. citizens living, working, or traveling abroad, should contact the closest U.S. embassy or consulate for a passport renewal. There is a list of U.S. embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions on the U.S. State Department's website (see Resources). Choose an agency's website for contact information. In some cases, depending on an agency's services, you can make an emergency appointment to expedite a renewal.
