The Best Way to Mail Passport Applications

Passport applications can be mailed to the U.S. Department of State only if you have had a previous passport issued, is undamaged and can be read, was issued after you turned 16 and was issued in the last 15 years. Your passport must be in your current legal name or you must be able to provide legal documentation showing your name change. Applications take six to eight weeks to process after they have been received.

      Fill out the passport by mail application (Form DS-82). This can be found on the U.S. Department of State website. Gather all documentation required, including your previous passport book, a current passport photo, documentation of name change, if applicable, and fees for your passport. As of March, 2011, the renewal fee is $110 and an additional $60 if you want your passport within two to three weeks with expedited service.

      Place all of your documents and application into a padded, weatherproof mailing envelope. All paperwork should fit into the envelope without being folded. The U.S. Department of State recommends using a Tyvek envelope or one similar.

      Seal the envelope and address it with the mailing address that is listed on Form DS-82. If you are choosing expedited service, you must clearly write "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the envelope.

      Mail your package at your local post office. It is recommended that you add delivery confirmation so that your package can be tracked.
