The Fastest Way to Receive a Passport

Routine passport applications take up to six weeks to process, while using the State Department’s expedited service can reduce this to between two and three weeks. However, if circumstances such as imminent travel plans or a life-or-death emergency overseas make waiting that long impossible, the fastest way to receive your new passport is to apply in person at a regional passport agency.
  1. Regional Passport Agencies

    • The State Department operates a total of 25 regional passport agencies across the country at which you can submit your passport application, so check the State Department’s website to find the agency closest to you. Bear in mind that not every state has a regional passport agency on its territory.

    Appointments Only

    • You can’t just walk into a regional passport agency; you must make an appointment in advance by calling 877-487-2778. Some agencies will ask to see proof of your imminent travel plans, so be prepared to show flight tickets or travel agent confirmation on paper; staffers can’t accept electronic evidence. For agencies that require proof, your departure date must be within two weeks, or within four weeks if you need to apply for a foreign visa before traveling.

    What You’ll Need

    • If this is your first passport, you should obtain a copy of Form DS-11, while for passport renewals you'll need Form DS-82. Both are available from the State Department website or from any passport acceptance facility. Bring the completed form with you, along with one passport photograph and any other required documents. These will include your current passport if you’re renewing it or, for new applicants, proof of your identity, such as a driver’s license, and evidence of your United States citizenship, like a birth certificate. You’ll also need a credit card, check or money order to pay the appropriate fee, which includes a $60 charge for applying at a regional passport agency.

    Receiving Your Passport

    • Some regional passport agencies, including Arkansas, Seattle and Vermont, offer a “will call” collection service if you must travel within five days due to a life-or-death emergency. However, other agencies do not provide this service, meaning you’ll have to wait for your new passport to arrive by mail. You can speed this process by paying for an overnight courier when you submit your application. If you haven’t received your passport with seven days of your departure date, contact the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778 to inquire about the status of your application.
