British Passport Requirements in the UK

Filing for and acquiring a British passport is fairly simple if you meet the requirements. To obtain a British passport, one must prove British citizenship, fully complete a paper or online application, pay the required fee and submit current passport-format photos of oneself. The wait time for receiving a passport can be as little as a week or a day, if you request Fast Track or Premium processing and pay the additional fee.
  1. Who Can Apply

    • Must be British.

Any person age 16 or older who is a British citizen, British subject, British overseas territories citizen, British national (living overseas) or British protected person can apply for an adult British national passport. Check the Home Office definitions or contact the UK Border Agency if you're uncertain if you fall into one of these groups. Children under the age of 16 must apply for a child passport separate from their parents' passports and must also comply with the citizenship requirement.

    Application and Fee

    • Nothing is Free.

An application for the British passport must be completed either on paper or online. Full instructions for filing out the form are available with the paper application or online. As of 2010, a £77.50 fee is due with the application. Replacing a lost or stolen passport and renewing an expired passport costs the same as a new passport. Child passports are at a discounted cost. The elderly may receive a passport for free; check with the Home Office for details. Cash, check, credit and debit are all accepted. Be sure to sign the application.

    Photos

    • You must submit two identical photos as part of the British passport application. The picture must be a head shot of you with a neutral facial expression, taken within the month prior to your application. Your pictures must also be countersigned if you look extremely different from previous photos of yourself or for persons under the age of 16.
