The Passport Requirements to Enter the US From Canada

Following the terrorist attacks in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, the travel document requirements for those entering the U.S. from Canada have become stricter. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which was made law by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, applies to all citizens of the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Bermuda who are entering or departing the U.S. from within the Western Hemisphere. These citizens were previously exempt from showing passports or other specific identity documents when entering the U.S. from Canada.
  1. Canadian Citizens

    • All Canadian citizens entering the U.S. by land, sea or air must show a valid passport issued by the Government of Canada, a valid trusted traveler program card (FAST, NEXUS, or SENTRI), or an enhanced driver's licence (EDL). These regulations have been in place since June 1, 2009.

    NonCanadian Citizens

    • Citizens of the U.S. who are returning to th U.S. from Canada must show one of the following: a valid passport issued by the U.S. government, a passport card, a valid trusted traveler program card (FAST, NEXUS, or SENTRI), an enhanced driver's license (EDL), military identification with official travel orders or a U.S. Merchant Mariner document. Bermudan citizens entering the U.S. from Canada require either a valid passport or a parole letter. Mexican citizens entering the U.S. from Canada require a valid passport and visa, a valid passport and border crossing card or a parole letter. Travelers of all other nationalities entering the U.S. from Canada must show a valid passport; in some cases a visa will also be required.

    Children

    • There are different requirements for children entering the U.S. from Canada.

Children from the U.S. or Canada under the age of 16 are permitted to enter the U.S. from Canada upon presentation of a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship; no photographic identification is required. Organized student groups (i.e groups of students age 19 or younger who are traveling with a school group, religious group, sports team or social organization) may present an original or copy birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate or a Canadian Citizenship Card.
