Once reported as lost, a passport is not eligible for renewal. A traveler must reapply for a passport and follow U.S. Department of State procedures as if he is applying for his first passport.
To replace a lost passport, an applicant must apply in person at a designated passport facility or agency. The application must include evidence of Social Security number, citizenship and two 2-inch by 2-inch photos; the applicant must also pay the passport application fee.
A person cannot renew his passport if he had reported it lost even if he finds it in time to renew. In this situation, U.S. Department of State cancels the passport and may even destroy it.
