Passport Requirements to Enter a Foreign Country From the USA

Entry requirement to countries outside of the USA vary according to the laws of the specific country. In addition to a USA passport, several other stipulations are commonplace.
  1. Canada, Bahamas and Mexico

    • Acceptable documents for entering these countries include a passport and a passport card. Canada also accepts the NEXUS card, while both Canada and Mexico accept the enhanced driver's license (EDL).

    Passports With Six Months of Validity

    • Many countries require that a USA citizen traveling to their country be in possession of a passport with at least six months of validity left on it. Such countries include, but are not limited to, China, Aruba, Fiji, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Barbados, Spain, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Belgium.

    Passports With Three Months of Validity

    • Some countries require only six months of validity for a passport: Denmark, Switzerland and Belgium.

    Visa

    • Many countries require that a visa application be filed in advance of your expected travel date. These applications can often be submitted to a consulate or embassy within the United States.

    Vaccinations

    • Many countries require proof of vaccinations, such as the International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever.

    Proof of Financial Solvency

    • Some nations, especially when dealing with travelers who anticipate a lengthy stay, require that proof of financial solvency for the duration of the visit be provided.
