The Best Way to Prevent Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is a common ailment and is caused by a disturbance of the inner ear due to repeated motion---often when traveling by car, boat or airplane. Unpleasant symptoms include nausea, vomiting, a general sense of feeling unwell, dizziness and sweating. Fortunately, there are strategies for reducing or eliminating the effects of motion sickness.
  1. Food and Drink

    • What you eat and drink before and during travel can help you control motion sickness. Alcohol should be avoided, as should foods that are excessively fatty or spicy or that you generally do not tolerate well. Steering clear of strong food odors can also help minimize the likelihood of motion sickness; for example, ask others near you to refrain from eating exceptionally smelly foods when traveling.

    Positioning

    • The way that you are seated and positioned can play a major role in whether or not you experience motion sickness. Locating a seat that experiences the least motion is ideal. On an airplane, find a seat near the wings; on a boat, stay on the lower levels near the center. In a car, sit in the front seat. Avoid facing backward whenever possible.

    Techniques

    • Regardless of the mode of travel, reading should be avoided, as it exacerbates motion sickness. Keep your gaze directed at the horizon or on a fixed point. Open a window or a vent to get fresh air. Finally, avoid sitting near others who suffer from motion sickness; watching them complain about it can trigger motion sickness in you.

    Medications

    • For more severe cases of motion sickness, medications are available. There are over-the-counter medications, such as Dramamine, that can significantly reduce the effects of motion sickness. If such medications do not work for you, your doctor can prescribe something stronger. Either way, there is no reason to have to put up motion sickness.
