Determine the amount of time you can safely wait for your new passport. Normal expedited service will deliver a passport in 2-3 weeks. Immediate expedited service will deliver a passport within 24 hours but will require you to renew in person (see Section 2).
Visit your local passport center (usually a Post Office), or obtain a DS-82 Passport Renewal Form from the State Department website (see Resources). Complete then form, then collect two passport photos from a local pharmacy or photo shop, and any required legal documents.
Submit your completed DS-82 Passport Renewal form along with your most recent passport, two passport photos. Also include a check or money order made out to "U.S. Department of State" for $110.00, plus $60.00 for expedited service fees and $14.96 for overnight passport delivery. Place all of these items in a padded envelope marked "EXPEDITE" and send to: National Passport Processing Center, PO Box 90955 Philadelphia, PA 19190-0955.
Determine whether an immediate renewal is necessary. If you require a new passport for travel in less than two weeks, or for a visa application in less than four weeks, or if your previous passport is damaged, was issued prior to your turning 16, was issued more than 15 years ago, or your name has changed and you do not have legal documentation stating such, you will not be able to apply by mail and will have to visit your local Passport Agency.
Make an appointment with your local Passport Agency by calling the National Passport Information Center nationwide appointment number at: 877-487-2778. There are branches in many major cities.
Make an appointment at the appropriate Passport Agency and bring your last passport, your two passport photos, proof of name change (if required), your completed DS-82 Passport Renewal form and credit card, check or money order for $110, plus $60 expedited-processing fee. You will complete the renewal process in person and collect your new passport on site that day.
