Requirements to Renew an Expired US Passport

It’s time to renew your passport, and you’re dreading have to make an appointment and wait in line, like you did when it was first issued to you. If this sounds familiar, the good news is that you might be able to avoid having to renew your passport in person. If you meet a list of requirements set by the U.S. Department of State, you can simply handle the passport renewal process by mail.
  1. Condition of Passport

    • Your passport must be undamaged, as you will need to submit it with your renewal application. If your passport is damaged, you must renew it in person, instead of doing it through the mail.

    Age of Issuance

    • Your passport must have been issued to you when you were at least 16 years old. If you were younger when it was issued, you are not eligible to renew it by mail.

    Date of Issuance

    • If your passport was issued to you in the past 15 years or less, you meet the requirements. If it has been more than 15 years, you must renew it in person.

    Name Change

    • If your name has changed since your passport was issued, you need to be able to produce legal documents to back this up. If you cannot do this, you will need to renew your passport in person.
