How to Apply for an Emergency Passport Card or Passport Book

Generally a passport takes up to eight weeks to receive in the mail. However, when you are in a pinch and a sudden overseas trip comes up, you can use an expedited service to quickly get a passport, nearly overnight. The process is similar to applying for a passport in a normal time frame, but it costs extra fees to rush deliver the item. Locate your nearest passport agency, and gather all documents to make the trip quick to get your application process started.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out the DS-82 application completely and honestly. Gather all documents needed to receive a passport. This includes two passport-sized photos, birth certificate (or proof of citizenship), photo identification and fee money. Visit a clerk at your local post office or passport agency to confirm the information on your application.

    • 2

Write "expedite" on the outside of the envelope you mail all your documents in. This will show the bureau you are paying to include the emergency service.

    • 3

Pay an extra fee to the agency or post office of $60 (as of the time of publication) plus the cost of the passport and overnight shipping.
