How to Apply for a Passport in India

Citizens of India who wish to see the world must apply in person for a government-issued passport. Applications are accepted at Regional Passport Offices, Passport Collection Centers, Speed Post Centers and District Passport Cells. To speed the process, prepare all of your documentation before visiting the passport office.

      Gather your documents. You need proof of address, proof of date of birth and proof of citizenship. You may also require other documents if your citizenship was granted under special circumstances.

      Fill out the application form.Use all capital letters and print with a blue or black ink ballpoint pen.

      Visit the nearest passport application center, hand in your application and supporting documents, and pay the fee. Fresh passports of 36 pages cost 1,000 rupees, as of the time of publication, and a larger book with 60 pages costs 1,500 rupees. Minors under age 15 pay only 600 rupees for passports with five-year validity.
