Do Children Need Passports to Go to Canada?

So you're taking the family on a trip to Canada and wonder whether children need a passport. The short answer is yes. All citizens, including children, in the United States, Canada and Bermuda must have a passport to enter or re-enter the United States.
  1. Minors Under 16 Years Old

    • Children under 16 must apply in person for a passport. Both parents or guardians must be present at the time of application to sign parental consent.

    Minors Ages 16 to 17

    • Children ages 16 to 17 must apply in person for a passport. Parental consent must be provided on the application or by notarized statement. A parent or guardian is not required to be present unless the minor does not have a photo ID.

    Required Documents

    • All minors must submit a certified copy of their birth certificate or naturalization documents that prove citizenship and parental relationship. A photo ID of the minor or the parent or guardian must be presented.

    Photographs

    • Minor applicants must submit two identical, color 2-by-2-inch passport photos. In the case of newborns and infants, supportive devices are prohibited in the photos.

    Cost and Processing

    • A child's passport costs $60, as of October 2009, plus a $25 processing fee. The time to process is three to four weeks. Separate checks are payable to the U.S. Department of State and the processing facility.
