Emergency passports for children must be obtained in-person at a designated passport agency. According to the U.S. Department of State, an emergency passport will be issued because of "serious illness, injury, or death in your immediate family that require you to travel within 24 to 48 hours to a country that requires a passport." Appointments for an emergency passport can be scheduled by calling the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.
At the scheduled appointment, you will need to present your passport application that can be obtained from your local passport agency or the U.S. Department of State website.
You will also need your child's birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship, proof of relationship to the child, parents' photo identification, consent of both parents and two passport photos of the child that are in color and 2-by-2 inches in size.
Passports for children cost less than passports for adults. Fees must be paid at the passport agency. The total cost of an emergency passport for a child will be $165. The cost includes $105 in passport fess and $60 for expedited service. Overnight delivery of the passport is available for $12.72.
After a completed application is submitted, emergency passports can be obtained within 24 to 48 hours if necessary conditions for life and death emergencies are met.
