USA Passports for Children

Since the U.S. implemented changes in passport requirements, many travelers may be confused about documentation required for children. According to the U.S. State Department, all children, including newborns and infants, must have their own passport for international travel.
  1. Under Age 16

    • Children under age 16 must apply in person with both parents/guardians, sign the application when instructed to do so, and supply social security number and proof of citizenship.

    Parent/Guardian Requirements

    • Both parents/guardians must submit evidence to the relationship of the minor, present photo ID and photocopy of ID of both parents/guardians, provide parental consent, provide two passport photos and pay the fee.

    Children ages 16 and 17

    • In addition, minors ages 16 and 17 must apply in person, have a parent/guardian present and photo ID and ID photocopy if minor does not have his own and establish parental consent.

    Process

    • Build at least four to six weeks of passport processing time into travel planning. Once the application is received, it can be tracked online.

    Cost

    • For children under age 16, the application fee is $60. A separate execution fee payment of $25 is required. Checks are made payable to the Department of State.
