How to Secure Passports

If you are planning a vacation to a foreign country, you will need a passport. If this is your first passport, you are under the age of 16 or your previous passport was lost or stolen, you will need to secure a passport in person. If none of these scenarios apply to you, you may be able to fill out a form online. If you are visiting Canada or Mexico, you do not need a passport unless you are flying. However, all adults will need to verify citizenship upon return by showing either a state issued photo ID or birth certificate.

Visit your local post office. Unless you have a specific problem in obtaining your passport, you do not need to visit a regional passport agency. If you need to go to an agency, call ahead. These places are appointment only.

Bring a government issued photo ID (such as a driver's license), your birth certificate, two current pictures of yourself and the required fee. Make sure the photos are in color and are at least 2 by 2 inches with a white background. Passports usually cost $100 for the first time and $75 for a renewal.

Plan ahead when securing a passport. You will usually need to wait about four to six weeks before receiving your passport. Make sure you have filled out the form properly and legibly to prevent it from being rejected. You can speed up the process by paying an additional $60.

Check the status of your passport online at the State Department's website at Travel.state.gov. If you are having difficulty securing a passport, call a regional passport agency. To locate one in your area call toll-free 877-487-2778.
