How to Track Your Passports

Once you have applied for your passport with the U.S. Department of State, you may be eager to track your application. Passport wait times, as of December 2010, were anywhere from four to six weeks from the date you submit your application. You are able to track the status of your application online so that you can ease your stress and assure yourself that you will receive your passport in time for your trip abroad.

      Visit the U.S. Department of State Website and click on the "passports" tab. This is the only website that can provide passport tracking information.

      Select the "Check Application Status" link. Read the "Privacy and Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts, Notices and Disclaimers" and click the box stating that you have read and agree to them then select "submit."

      Enter your last name exactly as it was stated on your passport application including all hyphens and suffixes. In the date of birth box input your birth date in the form of the 2 digit month, 2 digit date and four digit year. Enter the last four digits of your social security number in the appropriate box and click "submit."

      Your application status information will be displayed. You must wait five to seven days after you submit your application to be able to check the status online, however, as of December 2010, it was taking seven to 10 days to begin tracking your passport. If your passport application is not found after this time frame, contact the U.S. Department of State's National Passport Information Center.
