How to get a U.S. Passport

Anyone considering travel outside the United States needs to obtain a passport in advance. A passport contains your photo and personal information identifying you as a U.S. citizen. Inside the passport are additional pages, which will be stamped by officials in the countries you visit. Without a passport, you won't be permitted to pass through international gates often found at airports, harbors and borders. By understanding the requirements, you can obtain a passport before your scheduled travel.

Give yourself enough time to obtain your passport before scheduling international travel. Expect to receive your passport no sooner than six weeks from the time you submit your application. The U.S. Department of State processes applications on a first come, first serve basis.

Pick up a passport application form from your local post office. This form is known as a DS-11. Take the form home to complete, since it may require some time to complete. Complete all areas of the form correctly. Incorrect or missing information may result in your application being denied.

Schedule an appointment with your local post office to turn in your passport application. The post office won't accept unscheduled walk-ins. Dress appropriately; your passport photo will be taken during this appointment. Bring your completed application form, a copy of your birth certificate, a check for the application fee and a photo ID. Submit these required documents to post office officials and follow all additional instructions, if any. Expect to receive you passport and your returned birth certificate within six weeks of applying.
