How Do I Get an Irish Passport?

If you were born in Ireland, are the child or grandchild of someone born in Ireland, or are a naturalized Irish citizen, you can apply for an Irish passport. The process is straightforward, but is slightly different depending on whether or not you live in Ireland at the time of your application.

Instructions

  1. Resident in Ireland

    • 1

Obtain passport application form APS1E/G from your nearest Garda Station, Post Office, library, Citizen’s Advice Bureau or the Passport Offices in Dublin or Cork. Alternatively, download the form from the Department of Foreign Affairs website.

    • 2

Complete the form fully and clearly, including the witness section, which must be signed by a member of the Garda Siochana.

    • 3

Enclose two recent passport photographs (which must also be witnessed), the appropriate fee and either your proof of citizenship (if this is your first Irish passport application) or your most recent passport (if you are renewing your passport).

    • 4

Return your application to the Passport Office, either by Express Post or by regular post. You should only use regular post if you do not intend to travel within the next 4 to 6 weeks. Alternatively, you can submit your completed form in person at the Passport Offices in Dublin or Cork. Your new passport will be sent to you by post.

    Resident outside Ireland

    • 5

Obtain passport application form APS2E/G from your nearest Irish Diplomatic or Consular Mission, or download it from the Department of Foreign Affairs website.

    • 6

Complete the form fully and clearly, including the witness section. The person who witnesses your application must be amongst the professions listed on the form, including a police officer, lawyer, medical doctor or bank manager.

    • 7

Enclose two recent passport photographs (which must also be witnessed), the relevant fee and either your proof of citizenship (if this is your first application for an Irish passport) or your most recent passport (if you would like to renew your passport).

    • 8

Return your application to the nearest Irish Diplomatic or Consular Mission. They will submit your application to the Passport Office in Dublin by email, where your application will be processed before your new passport is returned using the diplomatic bag service. For this reason you must submit your application at least 4 to 6 weeks before you intend to travel.
