Verify that you are eligible for an Australian passport. In order to apply for a passport you must be a citizen of Australia. If you are renewing a passport, the passport you hold must be current or expired less than 24 months ago. It was valid for at least two years when it was issued, and it was was issued with your current personal details -- for example, the same name.
Determine which application form you need. If you are renewing a passport, complete the renewal application. If you are 18 years or older and you are applying for a passport for the first time, complete the adult passport application form. For applicants under 18 years of age, the child application should be completed. If an applicant is living outside Australia, they must complete the overseas application.
Visit the Australian Passport Office website and download a passport application form. Application forms can also be obtained from an Australia Post outlet, by requesting a blank application from the Australian Passport Office, or from an Australian diplomatic or consular mission overseas.
Obtain photographs of yourself for your application. You must provide two identical colour photographs that have been taken within the last six months. Unless you are completing a renewal application, one of the photos must have the words "this is a true photo of (insert your name)" on the back and it must be endorsed by your guarantor.
Fill out the application form in black ink and print within the boxes in capital letters. Ensure the appropriate guarantor completes the applicable parts of the form. Although you can fill out your application online, you must print a copy of the form in order for it to be processed.
Submit the form and pay the application fee. Applications can be submitted at an Australian Post outlet, the Australian Passport Office, or an Australian diplomatic or consular mission. Forms must be signed in person at one of these venues. You must also bring originals and photocopies of documents to prove your citizenship -- for example, an Australian birth or citizenship certificate -- and identity -- for example, a driver's license, Medicare card, and bills with your current address.
Obtain your new passport. Applications are generally processed within ten days -- not including delivery times to and from the passport office -- and passports are sent by registered mail to the applicant's address. If an applicant has asked for expedited processing, passports can be picked up at the passport office where the application was submitted.
