How to Obtain Passports After Becoming an Australian Citizen

Australian citizens can submit an application for a passport online. An applicant who doesn't wish to apply online may pick up a hard copy of the application at an Australia Post outlet or an Australian Passport Office. Those within Australia can also call the Australian Passport Information Service about getting one, while those outside the country should visit their nearest Australian consulate or embassy if an online application is not an option. The application is not available for download.

Instructions

    • 1
Australian passport applications can be completed online from anywhere in the world.

Visit the Australian Passport Office online, found on the government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.

    • 2

Answer the four questions listed. Those questions will determine whether you are eligible to receive an Australian passport and, if so, which application is appropriate for you. Note that Australian applicants currently in the country fill out a different application than those not in the country at the time of application.

    • 3

Click "next." Review the screen in its entirety and ensure that you meet the requirements for the application the database has prompted you to complete. For example, an individual who indicated that he is an adult currently in Australia will see that the forthcoming form is for those over the age of 18 and for those who are under 18 and married. Once you've reviewed the information, take note of the special requirements for printing paper. Since you will need to sign and mail your declaration, the paper you print your documents on must adhere to these guidelines.

    • 4

Select "accept" at the bottom of the screen and click "next."

    • 5

Complete the first step. It consists of inputting details about your upcoming travel plans and entering basic personal information such as your name, date of birth and sex. After answering the questions and going to the next screen, a computer-generated number will appear. Jot this down, as you will need the number should you have to come back and complete your application later.

    • 6

Move to step two. It will ask about documents in your possession which can substantiate your Australian citizenship. Enter the information from your documents directly into the application.

    • 7

Finish steps three through eleven. Questions will include information on any previous names or passports held, your current address, contact information, your proof of identity and more. Enter document numbers as prompted.

    • 8

Submit the application, pay the appropriate fees, and print out your declaration. Mail your declaration, along with any other support documents as required, to the appropriate address.
